hi,
I had some projects in the past, trying to bring some hollywood fx like transitions to open source software using blender, you may be interested on some of them, since you use blender you are the PERFECT person to see how viable this is:
Here is me talking about this project (old and eventually frozen, now I look older)

Post about the idea, explaining and barinstorming

This is what alex and I could put together
http://gvfx.blogspot.com/2008/01/script-gfvx-firts-version.html
brainstorming about UV maps for distor effects/transitions
http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewtopic.php?id=839
Multicamera brainstorming for OME
http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewtopic.php?id=837
brainstorming for DVD templates using blender 3D
http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewtopic.php?id=438
if some of these ideas are interesting to you, only need someone who can code python to TALK to blender to send render values and start renders to use later in the video editing app. In all this time, kdenlive and Openmoveeditor developers had shown interest but never did much with this.
Feel free to use these ideas and if you need more transitions/effects or other templates for openshot, just tell me and I will make some for you, actually the Open Movie Editor Templates for Open Movie Editor were created by me http://www.openmovieeditor.org/titles.html because I proposed a SVG/PNG realtime conversion for that software, but richard couldn`t ever pull that up (barinstorming: http://www.openmovieeditor.org/board/viewtopic.php?id=802)
Openshot is great dude! (and I use Premiere Pro CS5 and Finalcut at work).

Marcos,
Thanks for the links. I am very interested in some of your ideas, especially 3D transitions and how to best integrate this with OpenShot. Currently, I am trying to finish version 1.2.0 of OpenShot, so my time is limited, but I would love to discuss some of these ideas in more detail, perhaps via gtalk / jabber, etc... Thanks again for the information and hopefully we can talk soon.
Thanks!
-Jonathan
